7 Breakfast Ideas for Workaholics

Everyone says breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that we should always ensure we eat breakfast every day, etc. But hello??? Have these guys lived in Lagos before? For the regular person that lives and works in Lagos, eating healthy foods is a major challenge. I personally ensure that I prepare something I’ll eat during lunch break at the office, but what about breakfast? Most work days I find that most people do not get to eat breakfast. There’s just this mad rush to get dressed and beat the usual morning traffic.

You do not want to get stuck in the early morning Lagos traffic!

In the rush to leave the house, food is the last thing on your mind, but by the time you settle down in the office, your stomach would start reminding you… Man’s not hot. Lol. But really though, this has been my struggle. I’ve also noticed the same unhealthy trend with my colleagues and other friends who work 8 – 5 jobs.

Eating breakfast affects your energy level, which directly affects your effectiveness and productivity for the better part of the day. Not eating breakfast also means you tend to eat more than you normally would when you eventually eat, because you’d tell yourself you haven’t had anything to eat all day. So you’ll probably add weight when you don’t eat breakfast than when you do actually. Another thing about not eating breakfast is that you’ll also tend to eat unhealthy snacks packed with calories. And those snacks are never filling so you stuff yourself with more and more.

In the last 2 years, I have worked very hard to change the habit of skipping breakfast. I plan very healthy breakfast and it has worked magic with weight management and improved the condition of my skin. So guys, enjoy these quick breakfast recipes.

  1. Cereal!

First of all, you need to kick out that African mindset that foods like cereal, noodles, etc are not ‘real food’. You would be surprised at the number of calories those things pack. So stock up on your favourite brand of cornflakes, milk, sugar and crunch up! 🙂 You may want to pay attention to the calories per serving if you are on a weight management diet.

  1. Oats!!!

I know oats are technically cereals too, but I just had to mention it on its own. Most people have no idea how nutritious oats are. They are packed with dietary fibre, with high cholesterol-lowering capacities and are very filling. They’re also affordable. Unlike regular cereals though, you have to cook oats for a few minutes. You can do it before you leave the house in the morning or by using the office microwave at work.

This is how you prepare oats with a microwave:

  • Get some hot water from a kettle/dispenser and put some in a microwave safe plate. Add the oats, stir and pop it in the microwave for about 1 -2 minutes.
  • Make sure you keep an eye on it though! If it gets too thick, add some water and pop it back in the oven for a few seconds, and voila! Breakfast is ready. Just add milk and sugar if you want.
  1. Moin Moin and Custard

If you have moin moin left over from the weekend, awesome! It will serve you well during the week. You can also plan to stock up on enough MoiMoi to last you for the week. With hot water, you can prepare your custard in the usual way and then add milk and sugar to taste. Delish!

  1. Noodles!!!

Everyone eats noodles, right?  Maybe not, but if you do, you can stock up on your favorite brand of noodle. It’s also quite versatile in that you can add your preferred spices and some vegetables like carrots, green peas, for a good nutrient balance. It also makes it more filling. If you can, you can quickly prepare your dish of noodles before going to work, but if this doesn’t work for you, the microwave will come to your rescue! Lol. This is a hack is quite popular among my colleagues. 🙂

Here’s how to make noodles with a microwave:

  • Add some hot water to a microwave-safe plate and then break your noodles in it.
  • Pop in the microwave for 2 minutes, stir and add the seasoning.
  • Put it back in the microwave for a bit, and that’s it.
  • It only gets really soft if you add a lot of water, so be careful there.


  1. Mixed Fruit salad

It’s really easy to get fruits on your way out in the mornings. You might even find the fruits being sold already peeled, or you buy them the night before. Just cut up several fruits and you’re good to go. Healthy and filling!

  1. Smoothie and Boiled Eggs

You can blend up some fruits and vegetables into a smoothie. It is my favorite way of getting my daily serving of fruits and vegies. It can also be quite filling too. If you have good power supply, you can buy a week’s worth of fruits and vegetables, peel and dice them, put a mix of them in a food bag and freeze them. Every night move a bag into the refrigerator so it can defrost enough to blend easily in the morning. Add milk or any dairy replacement and blend into a smoothie every morning. You can add one boiled egg to this as a balanced breakfast.

  1. Sandwich and Tea.

Take a few slices of bread, spread your preferred butter, and other fillings (like tuna, fried eggs, avocado etc) in between slices. There, you have your sandwich. Put some tea bag in water and add your preferred sweetener and dairy. Easy peasy.
