7 Tips for Healthy Skin

With all the beauty trends going around now; from Korean skincare to organic beauty, it can be very easy to feel overwhelmed and get confused about what you should be doing to ensure a healthy skin.

Taking away the extras, let’s focus on the basic needs of your skin. This is where most people get it wrong. This is why I’ve compiled a list of questions we would all be asking ourselves today. Don’t worry, with the questions come answers that tell you what is right so you can make corrections if you’ve been doing something wrong.

  1. Do you avoid moisturizing?

For my girls with oily and combination skin, your answer may be yes. As a girl with combination skin, I understand why you may skip moisturizing. Your face produces enough oil as it is, why add more? However, this is a very big mistake. If you have these skin types, then moisturizers are very important for you. If you leave your face dry after washing it, you would just manage to convince your oil glands to go into overproduction to make up for the lacking moisture. My advice is to use light weight moisturizers that are oil free.

  1. Do you sleep with makeup on?

If you do, then you are unknowingly speeding up aging signs on your face. Also, sleeping with makeup on will clog your pores, trapping in oil and dirt that could result in acne breakouts that would be difficult to handle. Get used to performing a healthy night time skincare routine, even if you don’t wear makeup that day.

  1. Do you ignore your neck?

Believe it or not, your neck starts to show signs of aging before your face. No matter how old you are, check your neck for creases, they are definitely there. A good skincare expert would be able to tell a woman’s age from her neck. Make sure you clean your neck properly (especially since we put foundation there to blend in the skin tone) and moisturize it properly. However, do not put harsh products there as the skin on the neck is quite sensitive.

  1. Are you addicted to scrubs?

Yes, scrubs are good for removing skin cells and leaving your skin smooth and baby soft, but using them every single day is wrong and would not aid a healthy skin. It would leave your skin raw and sensitive and exposed to skin infections.

  1. Do you smoke?

Sorry girlfriend but if you do, you are killing your skin from the inside out. Worst part is, this kind of damage is very difficult to reverse, if possible at all. Smoking over a long period of time leaves the skin looking dull and aged.

  1. Do you substitute water?

If you’ve formed the habit of taking your meals with drinks or wine and avoiding water, you need to stop now. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it needs to be hydrated constantly. Drink as much water as possible, preferably in the morning and about 30 minutes before every meal. Do not wait till you feel thirsty before you drink water. No amount of moisturizer will help you if you are not constantly hydrated.

  1. Do you expose yourself to the sun?

The first rule of anti-aging and healthy skin care is to always wear sunscreen, even when you are indoors. The only time you don’t need to wear sunscreen is at night. Studies show that sun damage causes 80% of aging signs on the face. So the next time you want to step into that hot sun without properly covering your skin, think of the consequences it would have on your skin.
